Benedict was a Roman, the son of John, trained from boyhood in the papal choir school, where he stood out for his knowledge of Scripture and his singing. As a priest he was known for his humility, love of the poor and generosity.
He obtained from the Emperor Constantine IV a decree that shortened the long waits between popes, ending or easing the need for imperial confirmation. He worked to have the Third Council of Constantinople accepted in Spain, supported St Wilfrid of York, and restored many Roman churches.
He is honoured by the Church as Saint. Read his page in the dictionary of saints.
