The 73rd pope

Birthplace
Jerusalem
Pope from
24 November 642
Pope until
649
Died
649

Who he was

Theodore was a Greek from Jerusalem, the son of a bishop also named Theodore. His election was quickly confirmed by the exarch at Ravenna and he was consecrated in November 642.

What he is remembered for

His whole reign was spent resisting Monothelitism, the teaching that Christ has only one will: he refused to recognise Paul as Patriarch of Constantinople, received and then excommunicated the former patriarch Pyrrhus, and finally excommunicated Paul. The bishops of Cyprus, Palestine and Africa rallied to him. He was good to the poor of Rome and was buried in St Peter's on 14 May 649.
