Who they were

The son of the count de Montfort and cousin of Blessed Giorgio da Lauria, Raymond, while travelling through Spain, visited the shrine of Montserrat and there, before the Virgin, resolved to enter the Mercedarian Order. He took the habit at the convent of Sant'Eulalia in Barcelona; when the 24-year-old Giorgio heard the news he rushed to try, in vain, to talk his cousin out of religious life.

Raymond became a zealous preacher of great virtue. In 1335 Pope Benedict XII made him a cardinal priest of Santo Stefano al Monte Celio, and he worked tirelessly to ransom Christian slaves and converted many Jews to Christ. Warned by God of his approaching death, he died in peace. The order keeps his feast on 8 May.
