Lanfranco Beccari
Feast: 23 June (not on the universal Roman calendar; kept in the Roman Martyrology or local calendars)
Who they were
Lanfranc, of the Beccaria family, came from Grupello near Pavia and was bishop of Pavia for fifteen years, much of the time resisting the city's attempts to take Church property. When the city fathers demanded Church revenues for the fortifications and he refused, they forbade anyone to bake for him or feed him, and he went to Rome to Pope Clement III.
He returned to general rejoicing when a devout magistrate came to power, but when the old claims were revived he decided to resign and join the Vallombrosans, and died before he could do so, in 1194. His life was written by his successor, the canonist Bernard Balbi.
