Who they were
Sister Daniela of San Barnaba (Vicenta Achurra Gogenola) belonged to the Carmelite Missionary Sisters, founded by Blessed Francisco Palau y Quer. After serving in several houses of the congregation, she was living at the motherhouse in Gracia, Barcelona. When the Spanish Civil War broke out, on 31 July 1936, while caring for a sick person at home together with Sister Gabriella of San Giovanni della Croce, she was warned not to return to the convent. Both sisters sought shelter at a pharmacist's house but were captured by communist militiamen and shot in Barcelona, on the Rabassada road, that same day.
Vicenta Achurra Gogenola was born on 4 April 1890 at Berriatúa in Biscay, the second-youngest of six children of a poor but deeply religious family. At twenty-five she entered the Carmelite Missionary Sisters, professing final vows in 1921 and taking the name Sister Daniela of San Barnaba. Her sisters remembered her as cheerful, hardworking, good company, and devoted especially to the Sacred Heart and Our Lady of Mount Carmel, with a lively sense of humour, though quick-tempered when work piled up — faults she readily admitted and apologised for. She was beatified in Rome on 28 October 2007 among 64 martyrs of the Barcelona persecution.
