Amico di Avellana
Italian Roman Catholic monk and blessed
Feast: 3 November (not on the universal Roman calendar; kept in the Roman Martyrology or local calendars)
Who they were
Amicus came of a good family near Camerino and was a secular priest there before becoming a hermit and then a monk; his example is said to have led his parents, brothers and nephews into religious life. Finding his monastery too lax, he lived alone in the Abruzzi, where disciples gathered, and once relieved a famine by a miracle.
He spent his last years at Fonte Avellana, then recently founded by St Dominic of Sora, and died there about 1045, said to be 120 years old.
The miracles
There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.
Why that counted as sanctity
An eleventh-century hermit priest who died at Fonte Avellana.
