Felix came from a Roman senatorial family and is said to have been an ancestor of St Gregory the Great. Nothing certain is known of him before he succeeded St Simplicius in 483. He is sometimes numbered Felix II, because the earlier Felix II is counted as an antipope.
He excommunicated Peter Mongus of Alexandria and then Acacius, Patriarch of Constantinople, for accepting the emperor's compromise formula (the Henoticon), which began the Acacian Schism between East and West, not healed until 519. He also set out how Africans who had been rebaptised by the Arian Vandals could be received back into the Church. He is known mainly to students of that schism.
He is honoured by the Church as Saint. Read his page in the dictionary of saints.
