Anastasius, a Roman, became pope in 399 and reigned for about two years, as the barbarian invasions of the empire were beginning. He counted St Augustine, St Jerome and St Paulinus of Nola among his friends.
He is remembered chiefly for condemning the errors attributed to the writings of Origen. St Jerome praised him as a man of great holiness, rich in his poverty. Little more is known of him.
He is honoured by the Church as Saint. Read his page in the dictionary of saints.
