Urraca Díaz de Haro
Spanish Roman Catholic Abbess of Cañas and Blessed
Who they were
Urraca Díaz I de Haro was a Castilian noblewoman of the House of Haro. Born around 1192 in La Rioja to Diego López II de Haro and Toda Pérez de Azagra, she married Count Álvaro Núñez de Lara; on his death in 1218 she entered the Cistercian monastery of Cañas, which her grandparents had founded. After seven years she was elected abbess in 1225 and led the community for more than forty years, until her death in 1263, marked by humility, austerity and deep faith.
Her skill in governing and her generosity let the monastery be enlarged, including the Gothic church built in 1236, and a hospice and hospital founded. Her reputation for holiness, attested since the fifteenth century, rests on her charity to the needy and the strictness of monastic discipline. Her incorrupt body still rests in a Gothic tomb in the monastery's chapter hall, venerated as Blessed on 7 June.
