Who they were

Marcello Maruzzo was born at Lapio, near Vicenza, on 23 July 1929, one of eight children, with a twin brother, Daniele, who shared his studies and vocation. In 1946 both took the Franciscan habit, as Tullio and Lucio.

As a missionary in Guatemala, at Puerto Barrios, Entre RĂos and Morales, he was deeply committed to the poor and to the fight against illiteracy, which angered the death squads. He was killed in hatred of the faith in 1981, during the persecution of a Church working for justice and peace.

The miracles

As a martyr, beatified without a miracle.

Why that counted as sanctity

A Franciscan missionary killed for standing with the poor of Guatemala.

The cause

The cause continues. No postulation address is published here yet. Favours received through this person’s intercession, and offers of help, are best sent to the religious order or congregation they belonged to, or to the diocese where the cause was opened; either will pass them to the postulation.

A miracle approved by the Holy See is needed for the next step. If you know the postulation’s own page, tell us and it will be added here.
