Thomas van Gubbio
Feast: 25 March (not on the universal Roman calendar; kept in the Roman Martyrology or local calendars)
Who they were
Thomasius (Thomas) came from Costacciaro, about seven miles from Gubbio in Umbria. As a boy he visited shrines with his father, met the Camaldolese hermits at Sitria and joined them. Wanting a harder and lonelier life, he moved with the abbot's leave to a cave on Monte Cucco.
He lived there unknown for years on roots and wild fruit until lost travellers found him. Even then he would not change his way of life, and gave away to the poor whatever food he was brought. Young men gathered round him, and one of them later wrote his life. He is said to have died in 1337, worn out by his penances.
