Tammaro
Who they were
Tammaro was a bishop of Benevento in the fifth century. According to tradition he was a priest from North Africa who fled the Vandal persecutions there, was put to sea with companions, and landed on the coast of Campania. He first lived as a hermit near Capua before being acclaimed bishop of Benevento, probably around 465.
He governed the diocese with care for the poor until his death around 490, and was buried with honour in Benevento cathedral. His veneration later flourished especially at Grumo Nevano, near Caserta, where he has been venerated as patron since 1677; his relics reportedly survived the bombing of Benevento cathedral in the Second World War undamaged.
