Who they were

Siméon Cardon was born in Cambrai, France. On 4 August 1782 he made religious profession at the Benedictine monastery of Saint-Faron de Meaux, taking the name Father Simeone Maria. He fled France during the Revolution and reached Italy in 1795, taking the Cistercian habit at the abbey of Casamari, where he served as bursar and then claustral prior, and became head of the community after the abbot fled amid political upheaval and reports of plundering by the retreating French army.

On 13 May 1799 twenty soldiers broke into the abbey to plunder it. Father Simeone Maria, who had fed the soldiers, was gravely wounded and died the following morning; four other monks of Casamari were killed the same night, and a fifth died three days later of his wounds. He was beatified on 17 April 2021 together with his companions, and their liturgical memory falls on 16 May.

The miracles

As a martyr he was raised to the altars without a miracle.

Why that counted as sanctity

Cistercian priest of Casamari abbey, killed by plundering soldiers in 1799 after having fed them; beatified as a martyr in 2021.

The cause

The cause continues. No postulation address is published here yet. Favours received through this person’s intercession, and offers of help, are best sent to the religious order or congregation they belonged to, or to the diocese where the cause was opened; either will pass them to the postulation.

A miracle approved by the Holy See is needed for the next step. If you know the postulation’s own page, tell us and it will be added here.
