Serena of Spoleto
saint
Feast: 7 December (not on the universal Roman calendar; kept in the Roman Martyrology or local calendars)
Who they were
Serena is known only from the Life of Saint Sabinus, bishop of Spoleto, as a widow of the same period noted for her great charity and her devotion to the bishop. She was martyred during the persecution of Diocletian; nothing further is recorded of her life.
Her relics were kept at the monastery of San Savino near Spoleto until the 10th century, when the bishop of Metz obtained their translation to that city in 970, after which her veneration spread and her feast came to be kept on more than one date.
The miracles
There was never a formal cause: she has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.
Why that counted as sanctity
Widow martyred under Diocletian, known from the Life of Saint Sabinus, bishop of Spoleto, for her charity and devotion to him; feast 7 December, relics later translated to Metz.
