Segundo de Santa Teresa
Religioso trinitario, mártir durante la Guerra Civil española del siglo XX
Feast: 6 November (not on the universal Roman calendar; kept in the Roman Martyrology or local calendars)
Who they were
Segundo García y Cabezas was born on 24 March 1891 at Barrios de Nistoso, in the province of León, Spain. Drawn to the Trinitarian ideal of redemption and service, he took the religious name Secondo di Santa Teresa, completed his studies in philosophy and theology, and was ordained priest, going on to serve at the shrine of the Virgen de la Cabeza near Andújar, in Andalusia, caring for its many pilgrims alongside his confrere Father Prudenzio della Croce.
When the Spanish Civil War broke out in July 1936, republican militias besieged the shrine; the two priests were captured and taken to Andújar, where, refusing to renounce their faith or their religious state to save their lives, they were executed on 31 July 1936, holding their rosaries and breviaries and forgiving their killers. Pope Benedict XVI beatified him, with Father Prudenzio and hundreds of other martyrs of the Spanish Civil War, on 28 October 2007.
The miracles
As a martyr he was raised to the altars without a miracle.
