Saint Varus
early Christian martyr, soldier from Egypt
Feast: 19 October (not on the universal Roman calendar; kept in the Roman Martyrology or local calendars)
Who they were
In Egypt, Saint Varus, soldier, who, under the emperor Maximian, while visiting and comforting six holy hermits held in prison, chose to take the place of a seventh who had died in the hermitage and so, having suffered cruel torments together with them, won the palm of martyrdom.
The miracles
There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.
Why that counted as sanctity
The Roman Martyrology remembers him on 19 October as a soldier who took the place of a dead hermit and was martyred with six others in Egypt.
