Saint Procopius of Decapolis
8th century saint
Who they were
The Roman Martyrology records on 27 February: 'At Constantinople, in the time of the Emperor Leo, the holy Confessors Basil and Procopius, who fought courageously for the worship of holy images.'
Procopius, a monk of the Decapolis, was therefore one of the two men honoured on that day for their defence of the holy images under the emperor Leo, and the Martyrology counts him among the confessors rather than among the martyrs.
The miracles
There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.
Why that counted as sanctity
A monk who stood publicly for the holy images under the emperor Leo.
