Saint Gregory of Ostia
Cardenal de Ostia
Feast: 9 May (not on the universal Roman calendar; kept in the Roman Martyrology or local calendars)
Who they were
St. Gregory, cardinal and bishop of Ostia, was abbot of SS. Cosmas and Damian in Rome, when Pope Benedict IX promoted him to the episcopal dignity. Later he is said to have been sent as legate to Spain, where a plague of locusts was suppressed through his prayers. He died in 1044 and was buried in the monastery of S. Salvador de Pinnava in the kingdom of Navarre.
The miracles
There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.
Why that counted as sanctity
A Benedictine Martyrology (1922) remembers him on 9 May.
