Rolende de Gerpinnes
Christian saint from Belgium
Who they were
Rolende of Gerpinnes, or Saint Rolende, born in the 8th century and died at Villers-Poterie around 774, was a daughter of Desiderius, king of the Lombards, exiled in Gaul, and of his wife Ansa. According to popular belief, refusing and fleeing an imposed marriage because she wished to consecrate herself to God, she set out for a monastery in Cologne where she hoped to take refuge, but died of exhaustion on the way.
