Who they were

According to the legend, Priscus (Prix) and Cottus were leading citizens of Besançon who fled the persecution of Aurelian with other Christians to the forests round Auxerre, where they were hunted down and killed, about 272.

St Germanus of Auxerre found their bodies in the fifth century and built two churches in their honour, and their veneration spread widely. Butler says the legend cannot be trusted, but the entry of Priscus in the old Hieronymian martyrology points to a genuine early devotion.

The miracles

There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.

Why that counted as sanctity

An early martyr of the Auxerre region.
