Pietro II
Saint by the Catholic Church and is remembered as the 10th abbot of the Abbey of Cava.
Feast: 13 March (not on the universal Roman calendar; kept in the Roman Martyrology or local calendars)
Who they were
Peter II was the tenth abbot of the Abbey of the Holy Trinity at Cava dei Tirreni, governing from 1195 to 1208 in a period of political turmoil, and succeeding Blessed Benincasa not without contention in the community. He won the favour of Emperor Henry VI, who confirmed the abbey's possessions and privileges, but had to contend with disputes with the Archbishop of Salerno and the Bishop of Capaccio, and with encroachments by local barons that cost the abbey some of its feudal holdings and economic rights.
Despite these difficulties, in 1201 he founded the hospice of Vietri sul Mare, an important dependency of the abbey. He named Blessed Balsamo as his successor and died on 13 March 1208, being buried in the Crypta Arsicia; his relics now rest in the abbey basilica. Pope Pius XI confirmed the immemorial veneration paid to him on 16 May 1928.
