Who they were

Pasquale Aláez Medina was born on 11 May 1917 at Villaverde de Arcayos, in the province and diocese of León, to modest farming parents, and was baptised six days later. Drawn early to religious life, he began minor seminary studies with the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate at Urnieta in 1929, entered the novitiate at Las Arenas in 1934, and made first profession on 16 July 1935, moving to Pozuelo de Alarcón near Madrid to begin ecclesiastical studies; his superiors praised his devotion to Our Lady of Yecla, patroness of his home town, and his wish to serve on the missions.

On 22 July 1936, militiamen raided the Oblate house at Pozuelo de Alarcón, ostensibly searching for weapons, and arrested the community; Pasquale had renewed his religious vows only six days earlier. At dawn on 24 July 1936 he was among the first seven religious, plus a layman, read out from a list and taken without trial to La Casa de Campo between Pozuelo and Madrid, where he was shot in hatred of the faith, aged nineteen. He was beatified in Madrid on 17 December 2011, with Francisco Esteban Lacal and twenty-one other Oblate companion martyrs, by decree of Pope Benedict XVI.

The miracles

As a martyr he was raised to the altars without a miracle.

Why that counted as sanctity

Oblate of Mary Immaculate religious shot near Pozuelo de Alarcón at nineteen, six days after renewing his vows; beatified by Benedict XVI on 17 December 2011 among 22 companions.

The cause

The cause continues. No postulation address is published here yet. Favours received through this person’s intercession, and offers of help, are best sent to the religious order or congregation they belonged to, or to the diocese where the cause was opened; either will pass them to the postulation.

A miracle approved by the Holy See is needed for the next step. If you know the postulation’s own page, tell us and it will be added here.
