Otger
Christian saint
Feast: 10 September (not on the universal Roman calendar; kept in the Roman Martyrology or local calendars)
Who they were
Otger was a deacon who went to Rome with the priests Wiro and Plechelm, who were consecrated there as regionary bishops. After working in their homeland, the three friends crossed to the Netherlands, perhaps at St Willibrord's suggestion.
They preached in the lower Meuse valley and spent the rest of their time in prayer on St Peter's Hill, later the Odilienberg near Roermond, given to them by Pepin of Herstal. Butler notes that the medieval lives are late and unreliable.
The miracles
There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.
Why that counted as sanctity
An eighth-century deacon and missionary in the Meuse valley.
