Who they were

Olga Pérez-Monteserín Núñez was born in Paris in 1913 to a Catholic but not especially devout family, who raised her and her two siblings with a love of art and beauty. At seven she moved with her family to Astorga in Spain. When the Spanish Civil War broke out, she trained as a Red Cross volunteer nurse together with her friends María Pilar Gullón Yturriaga and Octavia Iglesias Blanco, and in October 1936 the three were sent to the small hospital at Somiedo in Asturias.

When militia forces attacked and occupied the hospital on 27 October 1936, Olga and her companions chose to stay with the wounded rather than flee. They were arrested and tortured through the night for openly showing their faith, and refused to renounce God or Spain. On 28 October 1936 the three nurses were shot in a field outside Pola de Somiedo; Olga was twenty-three. She was beatified on 29 May 2021 under Pope Francis, and her remains are venerated in the cathedral of Santa María in Astorga.

The miracles

As a martyr she was raised to the altars without a miracle.

Why that counted as sanctity

The cause

The cause continues. No postulation address is published here yet. Favours received through this person’s intercession, and offers of help, are best sent to the religious order or congregation they belonged to, or to the diocese where the cause was opened; either will pass them to the postulation.

A miracle approved by the Holy See is needed for the next step. If you know the postulation’s own page, tell us and it will be added here.
