Who they were

Nicolò Rusca was born at Bedano in Ticino in April 1563 and was formed at the Helvetic College in Milan under St Charles Borromeo. In 1590 he became archpriest of Sondrio, in a time of conflict between Catholics and Reformed and of decline in church institutions.

A priest of deep learning and generous pastoral care, he led the Catholics of Sondrio and the whole Valtellina with balance and moderation, but became the innocent victim of political and religious factions. Rejecting all the false charges against him, he was tortured and killed in hatred of the faith in 1618.

The miracles

As a martyr, beatified without a miracle.

Why that counted as sanctity

A moderate, learned parish priest who died a martyr in the religious strife of his time.

The cause

Nicolò Rusca has been beatified; the cause continues. Favours received, and offers of help, go to the postulation, the office that carries the cause forward: Diocese of Como: the cause of Blessed Nicolo Rusca.

A miracle approved by the Holy See is needed for the next step. Reporting one begins with the postulation.
