Who they were

Miguel Tiu Imul was born on 5 September 1941 in Cantón La Montaña, in the diocese of El Quiché, Guatemala. He served twice on the leadership of the local Rural Catholic Action and worked for many years as a catechist, wanting everyone to know and love the Word of God. When the Church in Quiché began to be persecuted for defending the rights of the population, he too was threatened, but said he was not afraid to die, since if he died he would die as Jesus died.

On 31 October 1991 he was shot dead on his way to work in the fields near his home, and died in front of his eldest daughter, at the age of fifty. He was beatified as a martyr on 23 April 2021, together with three Missionaries of the Sacred Heart and six other lay people of the diocese of Quiché.

The miracles

As a martyr he was raised to the altars without a miracle.

Why that counted as sanctity

Guatemalan lay catechist shot dead in 1991 during the persecution of the Quiché church; beatified as a martyr in 2021.

The cause

The cause continues. No postulation address is published here yet. Favours received through this person’s intercession, and offers of help, are best sent to the religious order or congregation they belonged to, or to the diocese where the cause was opened; either will pass them to the postulation.

A miracle approved by the Holy See is needed for the next step. If you know the postulation’s own page, tell us and it will be added here.
