Martí Tarrés i Puigpelat
Feast: 17 February (not on the universal Roman calendar; kept in the Roman Martyrology or local calendars)
Who they were
Martí Tarrés i Puigpelat, born in Berga, Catalonia, on 8 October 1877, entered the Capuchin order in 1896 and served as provincial minister of Catalonia from 1921 to 1924. An active and austere religious and superior, he was murdered by Marxists in Barcelona on 17 February 1937 because he was a priest.
His name heads the list of Capuchin martyrs of Catalonia, a group of 15 priests, 6 clerics and 5 lay brothers killed in Barcelona under the Popular Front republic. Pope Francis recognised their martyrdom in hatred of the faith on 5 June 2015, and they were beatified in Barcelona Cathedral.
The miracles
As a martyr he was raised to the altars without a miracle.
Why that counted as sanctity
Catalan Capuchin priest and former provincial minister, shot by Marxist militia in Barcelona in 1937; beatified in 2015 as head of a group of Capuchin martyrs of Catalonia.
The cause
Martí Tarrés i Puigpelat has been beatified; the cause continues. Favours received, and offers of help, go to the postulation, the office that carries the cause forward: Capuchins: Blessed Frederic of Berga (Martí Tarrés i Puigpelat).
