Who they were

Maria Teresa Gonzalez-Quevedo Cadarso was born in Madrid on 14 April 1930, Holy Saturday, daughter of a well-known Madrid doctor, and grew up comfortably near the Royal Palace, a lively, popular girl who preferred playing pelota to studying, though at only ten she had already written in a note, 'I have decided to be a saint.' Devoted to the Virgin Mary from 1944 through the Marian Congregation, she came to feel a growing call to religious life, and at seventeen, to general surprise, she left everything to enter the convent of the Carmelites of Charity.

In her three years of religious life she passed through all the mystical stages of sanctity, reading Saint Thérèse of Lisieux's Story of a Soul and shaping her own 'little way' through devotion to Mary. On 18 January 1950 she felt a severe headache; the diagnosis was tubercular meningitis, and she died on the night of Holy Saturday, 8 April 1950, crying out, 'My Mother, come and take me, and carry me with you to Paradise!' Pope John Paul II recognised her heroic virtues and declared her Venerable on 9 June 1983.

The miracles

The Church has not yet approved a miracle in this cause.

Why that counted as sanctity

Discalced Carmelite nun of Madrid who died of tubercular meningitis at nineteen after three years in religious life; declared Venerable by John Paul II on 9 June 1983.

The cause

The cause continues. No postulation address is published here yet. Favours received through this person’s intercession, and offers of help, are best sent to the religious order or congregation they belonged to, or to the diocese where the cause was opened; either will pass them to the postulation.

A miracle approved by the Holy See is needed for the next step. If you know the postulation’s own page, tell us and it will be added here.
