Mária Magdolna Bódi
The Vatican record
- 23 May 2024 — Martyrdom recognised (decree list, 2024)
Who they were
Mária Magdolna Bódi was a laywoman, born at Szigliget, Hungary, on 8 August 1921, who was killed in hatred of the faith at Litér, Hungary, on 23 March 1945. Pope Francis recognised her martyrdom on 23 May 2024.
The Dicastery's biography says she wanted to be a nun but no congregation could take her, so she made a private vow of chastity; when a Soviet soldier tried to rape her in a shelter at Litér she fought him off and urged the other women to flee, and he shot her dead.
The miracles
As a martyr she was raised to the altars without a miracle.
Why that counted as sanctity
The Church recognised her as a martyr in 2024.
The cause
The cause continues. No postulation address is published here yet. Favours received through this person’s intercession, and offers of help, are best sent to the religious order or congregation they belonged to, or to the diocese where the cause was opened; either will pass them to the postulation.
