Who they were

María Antonia Vergara Melgar, of Puente Genil, was born on 9 May 1867 and was one of the lay women of the diocese of Córdoba put to death in the persecution of the Church in Spain, suffering martyrdom on 23 July 1936. She was beatified on 16 October 2021 by Pope Francis among Juan Elías Medina and 126 companions of the diocese of Córdoba.

The miracles

As a martyr she was raised to the altars without a miracle.

Why that counted as sanctity

The decree on martyrdom records that she was put to death in hatred of the faith during the persecution of the Church in Spain.

The cause

The cause continues. No postulation address is published here yet. Favours received through this person’s intercession, and offers of help, are best sent to the religious order or congregation they belonged to, or to the diocese where the cause was opened; either will pass them to the postulation.

A miracle approved by the Holy See is needed for the next step. If you know the postulation’s own page, tell us and it will be added here.
