Who they were

Emanuele Gutiérrez Martín was born on 1 January 1913 at Fresno del Río (Palencia, then in the diocese of León) to a simple, devout farming family. He entered the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, noted for his intelligence, gentle and sincere character and love of music, and by the time of his death had completed his third year of theology and received the subdiaconate, with priestly ordination expected soon after.

Arrested with the Oblate community of Pozuelo de Alarcón, near Madrid, during the anti-clerical violence of the Spanish Civil War, he was taken on the night of 23-24 July 1936 with six confreres and a layman to Casa de Campo in Madrid and shot at dawn on 24 July, aged twenty-three, before he could be ordained priest. He was beatified on 17 December 2011.

The miracles

As a martyr he was raised to the altars without a miracle.

Why that counted as sanctity

Oblate subdeacon shot with his community at Casa de Campo, Madrid, during the Spanish Civil War, shortly before he would have been ordained priest; beatified 2011.

The cause

Manuel Gutiérrez Martín has been beatified; the cause continues. Favours received, and offers of help, go to the postulation, the office that carries the cause forward: Oblates of Mary Immaculate General Postulation: the Spanish martyrs.

A miracle approved by the Holy See is needed for the next step. Reporting one begins with the postulation.
