Laurentius Loricatus
Who they were
Laurence was born at Fanello near Siponto in Apulia and as a young man accidentally killed someone. In penance he went on pilgrimage to Compostela, and on his return in 1209 joined a community at Subiaco, soon receiving leave to live alone.
He spent thirty-three years in a mountain cave near St Benedict's Sacro Speco, with fierce penances; he was called Loricatus, the man in armour, from the spiked mail he wore next to his skin. He died in 1243, an inquiry into his life was held at the wish of Pope Innocent IV in 1244, and his veneration was approved in 1778.
