Landoald
Roman Catholic saint
Feast: 19 March (not on the universal Roman calendar; kept in the Roman Martyrology or local calendars)
Who they were
The only life of Landoald was written in 981, three centuries after his death, and Butler calls it very untrustworthy. It makes him a priest of the Roman church, of a Lombard family, chosen by Pope St Martin I to go with St Amand on his mission in what are now Belgium and Holland, together with the deacon Amantius and others.
He settled at Wintershoven in the diocese of Maastricht, where he built a church dedicated by St Remaclus about 659; King Childeric II helped the community. He died about 668 and was buried at Wintershoven, and his relics were moved several times, finally to Ghent in 980.
The miracles
There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.
Why that counted as sanctity
A seventh-century missionary priest at Wintershoven in present-day Belgium.
