Ladislas Radigue
Beato martire presbitero
Who they were
Armand-Pierre Radigue was born on 8 May 1823 at Saint-Patrice-du-Désert in Normandy, the son of peasants, and educated by his priest uncle after his mother's death. In 1843 he entered the novitiate of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary (the Picpus Fathers), taking the name Ladislao, professed perpetual vows in 1845, and was ordained a priest in 1848. Unable to go on foreign missions as he wished, he became a novice master and formator of future missionaries, later prior of the motherhouse.
When the Paris Commune uprising broke out in 1871 he sent most of his community away and stayed with a few others; their house was raided on 12 April and he was arrested with three fellow councillors of the congregation. Imprisoned first at Mazas then at La Grande Roquette, he spent his captivity hearing the confessions of his fellow prisoners, and was shot with his companions at a house on the rue Haxo on 26 May 1871. He was beatified in Paris on 22 April 2023.
