Julius the Veteran
Bulgarian saint
Feast: 27 May (not on the universal Roman calendar; kept in the Roman Martyrology or local calendars)
Who they were
At Silistra in Moesia, in present-day Bulgaria, Saint Julius, martyr, who, a veteran of the army now retired, was arrested by officers in time of persecution and brought before the governor Maximus; having scorned the idols in his presence and confessed the faith of Christ with great firmness, he was punished with a sentence of death.
The miracles
There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.
Why that counted as sanctity
The Roman Martyrology remembers him on 27 May as a retired army veteran put to death at Silistra for confessing Christ.
