Who they were

Joseph Thao Tiên was born on 5 December 1918 in Ban Ten, Laos, to a family with a strong Christian tradition. Trained first as a catechist, he went on to the seminary and was ordained a priest in Saigon in 1949. Back in his own region, when Pathet Lao communist guerrillas took control he chose to stay with his people rather than be evacuated.

After Easter 1954 he was arrested and held in a prison camp, where he was pressed to renounce his faith and abandon priestly celibacy in exchange for his life, but he refused. He was shot near Ban Ta Lang on 2 June 1954. Honoured as the protomartyr of Laos, he headed a group of seventeen martyrs of Laos beatified together at Vientiane on 11 December 2016.

The miracles

As a martyr he was raised to the altars without a miracle.

Why that counted as sanctity

Laotian priest shot in 1954 for refusing to renounce his faith and priestly celibacy; beatified as protomartyr of Laos in 2016.

The cause

Joseph Tiên has been beatified; the cause continues. Favours received, and offers of help, go to the postulation, the office that carries the cause forward: Oblates of Mary Immaculate: the cause of the Martyrs of Laos.

A miracle approved by the Holy See is needed for the next step. Reporting one begins with the postulation.
