Who they were

Jean Joseph Gérard was born on 2 March 1831 at Bouxières-aux-Chênes near Nancy and grew up on the family farm. Moved by accounts of the missions, in 1851 he joined the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate; St Eugène de Mazenod ordained him deacon and sent him, at 22, to Natal.

Ordained priest at Pietermaritzburg on 19 February 1854, he began among the Zulu and then, above all in Basutoland (Lesotho), proclaimed Christ tirelessly until his death on 29 May 1914.

The miracles

The Dicastery's biography does not describe the miracles approved in the cause.

Why that counted as sanctity

A missionary who spent sixty years bringing Christ to the peoples of southern Africa.

The cause

Joseph Gérard has been beatified; the cause continues. Favours received, and offers of help, go to the postulation, the office that carries the cause forward: Oblates of Mary Immaculate: the cause of Blessed Joseph Gerard.

A miracle approved by the Holy See is needed for the next step. Reporting one begins with the postulation.
