Who they were

Josef Engling (1898-1918) was a member of the Pallottine community and of the Schoenstatt Movement who died as a soldier in the First World War. Those who examined his life found no evidence that he killed anyone, and his later diaries show growing doubts about the purpose of the war.

A supplementary diocesan inquiry into his life closed in Trier on 17 June 2008, presided over by Auxiliary Bishop Robert Brahm, and the Positio on his virtues, over 700 pages long, was submitted to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints in April 2016.

The miracles

The Church has not yet approved a miracle in this cause.

Why that counted as sanctity

A young Schoenstatt member and First World War soldier whose cause for beatification is under study in Rome.

The cause

The cause continues. No postulation address is published here yet. Favours received through this person’s intercession, and offers of help, are best sent to the religious order or congregation they belonged to, or to the diocese where the cause was opened; either will pass them to the postulation.

A miracle approved by the Holy See is needed for the next step. If you know the postulation’s own page, tell us and it will be added here.
