José de Jesús y María
religioso trinitario, mártir durante la Guerra Civil española del siglo XX
Feast: 6 November (not on the universal Roman calendar; kept in the Roman Martyrology or local calendars)
Who they were
José Vicente Hormaechea y Apoitia, born in the Basque Country, entered the Trinitarian Order and was ordained a priest, taking the name Giuseppe di Gesù e Maria. When the Spanish Civil War broke out in July 1936, violence against clergy and religious erupted across the Republican zone; rather than flee, he stayed at his post, continuing to celebrate Mass and administer the sacraments in secret.
Arrested around August or early September 1936, he was taken with fellow prisoners to the outskirts of Madrid and shot on 4 September 1936. He was beatified by Pope Francis on 23 October 2021, and his feast is kept on 4 September, the day of his death.
The miracles
As a martyr he was raised to the altars without a miracle.
Why that counted as sanctity
Trinitarian priest shot near Madrid on 4 September 1936 during the Spanish Civil War's anti-clerical persecution; beatified in 2021.
