Who they were

Jean Batiffol was a diocesan priest of Paris, born in Paris on 10 April 1907 and baptised on 14 April; from a family close to the Church, he entered the Carmelite seminary in 1933 and was ordained in 1938. Called up as an artillery officer, he was captured on 22 June 1940 and moved to the officers' camp VI B at Dössel and then to Oflag XVIII at Lienz, and in July 1943 he chose to become chaplain of the hospital at Graz in Austria, where the American bombardment of 18 December 1944 saved him from immediate arrest. He was beatified on 13 December 2025 by Pope Leo XIV.

Why that counted as sanctity

A priest and prisoner of war who chose to serve as a hospital chaplain at Graz, where the Gestapo came for him.

The cause

The cause continues. No postulation address is published here yet. Favours received through this person’s intercession, and offers of help, are best sent to the religious order or congregation they belonged to, or to the diocese where the cause was opened; either will pass them to the postulation.

A miracle approved by the Holy See is needed for the next step. If you know the postulation’s own page, tell us and it will be added here.
