Who they were

Juan Martínez Cid was born in Medina del Campo, Spain, in 1569, entered the Dominican Order and was ordained priest in 1594. In 1600 he left for Japan, where he devoted himself to preaching, teaching and caring for the sick, winning many converts despite growing hostility from the Japanese authorities.

Arrested in 1617 for his missionary work, he endured two years of imprisonment, torture and humiliation without wavering in faith, continuing to preach the Gospel to his fellow prisoners. He was beheaded on 19 May 1619 and beatified by Pope Urban VIII in 1627.

The miracles

As a martyr he was raised to the altars without a miracle.

Why that counted as sanctity

Spanish Dominican missionary priest in Japan, arrested in 1617 and beheaded for the faith in 1619; beatified in 1627.

The cause

The cause continues. No postulation address is published here yet. Favours received through this person’s intercession, and offers of help, are best sent to the religious order or congregation they belonged to, or to the diocese where the cause was opened; either will pass them to the postulation.

A miracle approved by the Holy See is needed for the next step. If you know the postulation’s own page, tell us and it will be added here.
