Who they were

Hilarus, a Sardinian, was Pope Leo I's legate at the Robber Council of Ephesus in 449, where he defended the rights of the Roman See and opposed the condemnation of St Flavian, escaping the violence of Dioscorus by flight.

Elected pope in 461, he continued Leo's vigorous rule, especially in Gaul and Spain. He died on 28 February 468 and was buried at St Lawrence Outside the Walls.

The miracles

There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.

Why that counted as sanctity

A pope who defended the faith at great personal risk.
