Gorgonius
Christian saint and martyr together with Dorotheus and Peter
Feast: 12 March (not on the universal Roman calendar; kept in the Roman Martyrology or local calendars)
Who they were
Gorgonius held a high post in the household of the Emperor Diocletian and was often trusted with important affairs. When the persecution broke out in 304 he was among the first accused, and because he held firm to the faith he was cruelly tortured at Nicomedia with his companions Dorotheus, Peter and others, and finally strangled.
Diocletian ordered their bodies thrown into the sea, but Christians recovered them. The body of Gorgonius was later taken to Rome, and in the eighth century St. Chrodegang of Metz enshrined it at the monastery of Gorze. He is honoured in the East on 12 March.
The miracles
There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.
