Gaudentius
Swiss saint (4th century AD)
Feast: 7 May (not on the universal Roman calendar; kept in the Roman Martyrology or local calendars)
Who they were
Gaudentius of Bergell is remembered as the evangeliser of the Grisons region of Switzerland, a martyr of the 4th century whose veneration was approved by Urban IV in 1262. A church holding his tomb stood at Casaccia, near Vicosoprano in the Bregaglia valley, from as early as the 10th century until it was destroyed by Protestants in 1553.
According to a breviary of 1620, his feast was kept in the diocese of Coimbra on 2 August; it is now fixed on 22 January.
The miracles
There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.
