Who they were
At Mainz in Gallia Belgica, in present-day Germany, Saint Ferrutius, martyr, who, having left the army to serve Christ more freely and fittingly, is said by tradition to have died a martyr.
The miracles
There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.
Why that counted as sanctity
The Roman Martyrology remembers him on 28 October as a soldier who left the army to serve Christ and, tradition says, died a martyr at Mainz.
