Euplius
martyr and saint
Feast: 12 August (not on the universal Roman calendar; kept in the Roman Martyrology or local calendars)
Who they were
At Catania, Saint Euplius, martyr: according to tradition, during the persecution of the Emperor Diocletian, he was thrown into prison by the governor Calvisianus because he was found with the book of the Gospels in his hands; questioned several times, he was beaten to death for having replied that he proudly kept the Gospel in his heart.
The miracles
There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.
Why that counted as sanctity
The Roman Martyrology remembers him on 12 August as a martyr of Catania who, according to tradition, was beaten to death for keeping the Gospel.
