Eberhard von Kumbd
Who they were
Eberhard, born into the family of the counts of Stahleck, served as a page at the court of Heidelberg before wanting, while still very young, to become a Cistercian at the abbey of Schönau; not having finished his studies, he was not accepted. Undeterred, at sixteen he withdrew to a hermitage he built himself at Chumbd, near Simmern, in the diocese of Mainz, and later resolved to found a convent of Cistercian nuns there.
The abbot of Eberbach sent him a group of nuns to begin the community, which became the abbey of Chumbd, placed under Eberbach's authority; only then did Eberhard himself receive the Cistercian habit. Made subdeacon and spiritual father of the nuns, among whom were two of his own sisters, he was later joined by a brother as a lay brother. After a long illness he died in reputation of holiness at twenty-eight, on 30 November 1191, and the Cistercians entered him in their Menology.
