Who they were
A Marist Brother of the Schools, in the world José Cesari Mercadal, he was 33 years old when he was killed in the persecution in Spain. He was beatified on 28 October 2007 by Benedict XVI with Laurentino, Virgilio and 44 companions of the Institute of the Marist Brothers of the Schools.

As a martyr he was raised to the altars without a miracle.
Why that counted as sanctity
The decree on martyrdom lists him, aged 33, among the Marist Brothers killed in the 1936 persecution in Spain.
