Demetrianus of Chytri
Feast: 6 November (not on the universal Roman calendar; kept in the Roman Martyrology or local calendars)
Who they were
Demetrian was born at Sika in Cyprus, the son of a priest. Widowed three months after his marriage, he became a monk in the monastery of St Antony, was ordained, and became its abbot, known for his holiness and gift of healing.
After nearly forty years as a monk he was chosen bishop of Khytri; he hid in a cave to escape, but his friend gave him away. Near the end of about twenty-five years as bishop, when the Saracens carried off many Cypriots, he is said to have followed the raiders and won the captives' release. He died about 912 and is counted among the greatest saints of Cyprus.
The miracles
There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.
Why that counted as sanctity
A monk and bishop of Khytri, one of the great saints of Cyprus.
