Deiniolen
6th c. Welsh saint
Feast: 22 November (not on the universal Roman calendar; kept in the Roman Martyrology or local calendars)
Who they were
Deiniol was abbot of Bangor between the 6th and 7th centuries; virtually nothing is recorded of his life beyond the year of his death, 621. According to Benedictine annals, in 616, when King Æthelfrith of Northumbria massacred his monks and destroyed his monastery, Deiniol himself escaped the slaughter.
A troparion for 'Deiniol the Younger' commemorates him as one preserved from martyrdom who nonetheless persevered in his missionary labours. Irish calendars keep his feast on 22 December, though elsewhere it falls on 22 November.
The miracles
There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.
Why that counted as sanctity
